A 12-inch wheel bike is generally suited to children aged around 2 to 4 years old. The best way to confirm fit is to check that your child can place both feet flat on the ground when seated, which gives them confidence and control while learning. A balance bike has no pedals and teaches young children to glide and steer before learning to pedal. A 12-inch pedal bike is the natural next step, introducing pedalling and braking skills once a child has already developed basic balance and coordination.

The most important factors are weight, seat height, and brake usability. A lighter bike is easier for small riders to handle and manoeuvre, while low seat height lets them touch the ground confidently, and simple hand brakes should be sized so small hands can actually squeeze them, learning to use the hand brake over the easier to learn rear coaster brake is the best way to set them up for success.

At this stage, simplicity is key. Look for a lightweight frame, an adjustable seat post, and easy-to-reach brakes. Extras like chain guards and smooth tyres suited to footpaths and driveways are practical bonuses for everyday neighbourhood riding.

If your child needs the seat raised to its maximum height and still looks cramped, or if their knees are rising above the handlebars while pedalling, it is likely time to move up to a 14 or 16-inch wheel bike. Most children outgrow a 12-inch bike between ages 4 and 5.
