14-inch bikes are generally suited to children aged around 2 to 5 years old. The best way to confirm fit is to check your child's height and ensure they can place their feet flat or nearly flat on the ground when seated, which gives them confidence to stop safely.

If your child is brand new to pedalling, training wheels can help them focus on steering and pedalling without worrying about balance. Children who have already spent time on a balance bike often have enough balance confidence to skip training wheels and transition directly to a pedal bike.

Bike weight matters a lot for young riders because toddlers and preschoolers have limited strength and coordination. A lighter bike is easier for small children to handle, steer, and pick up if it falls, which helps build confidence early on.

Look for reliable hand brakes that small hands can actually squeeze, as well as a coaster brake option for younger riders who may struggle with hand brakes initially. Smooth, rounded components and a sturdy frame are also worth checking before purchasing.

14-inch bikes are best suited to low-speed riding in backyards, on footpaths, or at local parks. They are not designed for rough terrain or longer distances, so a smooth, flat surface is ideal for children learning to ride at this age.

A good sign your child has outgrown their bike is when their knees are rising above the handlebars while pedalling, or the seat cannot be raised high enough for a comfortable leg extension. At that point, moving up to a 16-inch or larger kids bike is usually the right next step.
