The correct tube size is determined by your wheel diameter and tyre width, both of which are usually printed on the sidewall of your tyre. Common sizes include 700c for road bikes, 27.5-inch and 29-inch for mountain bikes, and smaller sizes like 20-inch or 24-inch for kids' bikes. Always check your tyre markings before purchasing to make sure the tube you choose is compatible with your setup. Tube width is usually printed as a range; commonly listed in inches for mountain and hybrid bikes eg 1.90 - 2.50", or millimeters for road bikes eg 25 -32 as long as your tyre with is somewhere within that range you'll be fine.

Presta valves are narrower and more commonly found on road and performance bikes, while Schrader valves are wider and used on most casual, hybrid, and mountain bikes. The valve type you need depends on the hole size in your wheel rim, so check your rim before buying a replacement tube. It is also worth confirming your pump is compatible with the valve type on your new tube before you head out on a ride. Most modern bike pumps can accomidate both valve types but it is worth checking before you buy.

TPU tubes are made from thermoplastic polyurethane, which is significantly lighter than the standard butyl rubber used in most tubes. They are a popular upgrade for performance-focused riders looking to reduce rotational weight and improve ride feel. If you are racing or chasing personal bests, TPU tubes can offer a noticeable benefit, though they do come at a higher price point than standard options.

If you frequently ride on roads or trails with debris, thorns, or rough surfaces, thorn-resistant tubes are a practical investment. They use a thicker construction to reduce the chance of punctures penetrating the tube, which can save time and frustration on longer rides or commutes. They are heavier than standard tubes, so they suit riders who prioritise reliability over marginal weight savings.

Kids' bikes use a range of smaller wheel sizes, typically from 10-inch through to 24-inch depending on the age and size of the child. Common sizes include 12-inch, 14-inch, 16-inch, 18-inch, 20-inch, and 24-inch, so it is important to check the wheel size on the bike before purchasing a replacement tube.
