Riders commuting in warmer conditions may prioritise airflow, while those riding in varied weather might prefer a more enclosed design.

U locks and D locks are generally considered the strongest option for high-risk areas like city streets, as their solid metal shackle resists bolt cutters and is difficult to break through. Chain locks offer a good middle ground between flexibility and strength, while folding locks and cable locks tend to suit lower-risk environments or work best as a secondary lock. If you park in busy urban areas regularly, investing in a higher-security lock is worth the extra cost.

Floor pumps are designed for home use and make it easy to inflate tyres quickly and accurately, often with a built-in pressure gauge. Portable pumps are compact enough to carry on a ride and are essential for fixing a flat when you are away from home. Most cyclists benefit from having both, using a floor pump for regular maintenance and a portable pump as a backup on the road or trail.

Bottle cages come in different sizes and materials, and not all cages are compatible with every bottle. Most standard cycling bottles fit a wide range of cages, but it is worth checking compatibility if you are using an oversized or unusually shaped bottle. Cages also vary in how securely they hold a bottle, so riders on rough terrain may want a tighter-gripping option to prevent bottles from bouncing out.
