Since 1982, Ortlieb has been making waterproof bags in Heilsbronn, Germany, where founder Hartmut Ortlieb began experimenting with truck tarpaulins and a sewing machine. By 1984 he introduced high-frequency welding so seams are watertight even under heavy rain, and later invented the roll-closure system now used worldwide.
