For very young beginners, a balance bike is a great starting point as it helps children develop coordination before moving to pedals. Once they're ready for pedals, a lightweight bike with a simple single-speed drivetrain is usually the easiest to manage. Keeping the bike light and simple helps build confidence faster.

If your child's knees are rising above, or hitting the handlebars when pedalling, or they can no longer extend their legs comfortably at the bottom of the pedal stroke, it's time for a bigger size. A bike that's too small can make riding uncomfortable and harder to control. Most kids move up a wheel size every couple of years depending on their growth rate.

Buying slightly larger can offer better value since kids grow quickly, but a bike that's too big can be difficult to control and may put a child off riding. A small amount of growing room is fine, but a child should still be able to touch the ground with both feet when seated. Prioritising a comfortable, confident fit is more important than maximising how long the bike will last.

If your child will mostly ride on footpaths, driveways, or in parks, a standard kids bike with smooth or lightly treaded tyres will work well. For kids who want to ride on grass, gravel, or rougher surfaces, a bike with wider tyres and more tread will provide better grip and stability and depending on the bike size (20-inch and above) gears would be a good option to help them with hills. Thinking about the riding environment helps narrow down the right style before you buy.
