How to Shop for Kids Helmets: Fit, Age, and Comfort Considerations

When shopping for kids helmets, the most important starting point is finding the right fit. A helmet that sits too loose or too far back on the head won't provide the protection it's designed for, so always check sizing guides and look for adjustable fit systems that can grow with your child. Beyond fit, consider the age and riding style of your child. Younger riders in bike seats or trailers benefit from baby and toddler helmets with a flat back design, while older kids aged six and up are better suited to youth helmets with more ventilation and lighter construction. Comfort plays a bigger role than many parents expect, as a helmet your child actually enjoys wearing is one they'll keep on. All kids helmets at 99 Bikes meet Australian safety standards, so you can shop with confidence across the range. Read our FAQs further down to learn what to look for when choosing the right kids helmet.

Commonly Asked Questions about Kids Helmets

How do I find the right size helmet for my child?

Start by measuring your child's head circumference and comparing it to the sizing guide for the helmet you're considering. Most kids helmets feature an adjustable fit dial or retention system that allows you to fine-tune the fit as your child grows. A correctly fitted helmet should sit level on the head, about two finger-widths above the eyebrows, and feel snug without being uncomfortable.

What is the difference between a toddler helmet and a youth helmet?

Toddler helmets are designed for younger children, typically those under five, and often feature a flatter back panel to accommodate rear-facing bike seats and trailers. Youth helmets are built for older kids aged around six and up, and tend to be lighter with more ventilation to suit active riding. Choosing the right category for your child's age and riding situation ensures both comfort and proper protection.

Can my child use the same helmet for cycling, scooting, and BMX?

Standard bike helmets are designed primarily for cycling and offer a slightly different level of protection to BMX or skate-style riding, which involves a higher risk of multiple lower-level impacts. BMX or skate-style helmets are built with more coverage and less ventilation to handle repeated lower-level impacts and are a better choice if your child rides a scooter or BMX regularly. If your child does both, it is worth considering which activity they do most and selecting accordingly, or having a dedicated helmet for each.

Do all kids helmets at 99 Bikes meet Australian safety standards?

Yes, all kids helmets sold at 99 Bikes meet Australian safety standards, so you can shop across the range with confidence. Australian standards set minimum requirements for impact protection, retention system strength, and coverage area. Compliance is a baseline across the range, meaning the choice between helmets comes down to fit, comfort, features, and intended use rather than safety certification.

What should I look for in a helmet for a baby or toddler in a bike seat or trailer?

For babies and toddlers riding in a rear-mounted bike seat or trailer, look for a helmet with a flat or reclined back panel that allows the child's head to rest comfortably without being pushed forward. A lightweight design and soft internal padding are also important for younger children who may be in the seat for extended periods.
