Chainrings

The most important factors to check are your crank's bolt circle diameter (BCD), the number of chainring bolts, and your drivetrain speed such as 11-speed or 12-speed. Getting these details right before purchasing will save you time and avoid the need for returns. You can usually find this information in your crank or groupset documentation, or by measuring your existing chainring.

If your chainring is worn or damaged and you are happy with your current gearing, a like-for-like replacement is the simplest and most straightforward option. However, if you find yourself struggling on climbs or wanting more top-end speed, adjusting your tooth count can make a noticeable difference to how your bike performs. A smaller chainring makes climbing easier, while a larger one gives you more speed on flat or descending terrain.

Each discipline has its own chainring design to suit the demands of that style of riding. Road chainrings are typically optimised for smooth, efficient power transfer at higher cadences, while mountain bike chainrings are built to handle rough terrain and often feature narrow-wide tooth profiles to improve chain retention. BMX chainrings are designed for durability and simplicity, and eBike-specific chainrings are built to withstand the higher torque loads produced by motor-assisted drivetrains.

A narrow-wide chainring features alternating wide and narrow teeth that are shaped to grip the chain more securely, reducing the chance of the chain dropping during rough or technical riding. This design is particularly common on mountain bike setups running a single chainring without a front derailleur. If you ride on smooth roads or use a front derailleur with multiple chainrings, a standard tooth profile is generally sufficient.

Common signs of a worn chainring include skipping under load, difficulty shifting, or visible wear on the teeth such as a hooked or shark-fin shape. Chainrings typically wear at a slower rate than chains, but running a worn or stretched chain for too long will accelerate chainring wear considerably. As a general guide, a chainring may last through two to four chain replacements depending on riding style, conditions, and the quality of the component. Smaller chainrings, such as those used on the inner positions of a double or triple crankset, tend to wear faster due to the increased chain articulation angle at smaller diameters.
