Frequently asked questions
Our staff are well-known for being the most friendly, knowledgeable and professional bike experts, and will help you with any questions you may have. Here are some of the most common:
Choosing the Right Kids Bike for Long-Term Use
When buying a kids bike, it’s important to consider long-term usability. Kids grow quickly, so choosing an adjustable bike for kids with a seat and handlebars that can be raised ensures they get more use out of it.
A lightweight kids bicycle makes riding easier, especially for younger riders transitioning from a balance bike. Features like hand brakes, sturdy frames, and wider tires improve stability and control. Whether you're looking for a toddler bike for a 3-year-old, a bike for a 4-year-old, or a 20 inch bike for older kids, investing in a well-fitted, durable model will enhance their riding experience.
Measuring a Kid for Bike Size
Kids push bike sizes refer to the diameter of the wheels, which are measured in inches. We recommend visiting your local 99 Bikes store for a professional bike fit and sizing, however the general rule of thumb is:
Best Bikes For Kids To Learn On
The average age for kids to learn how to ride a bike is 5 years old. Beyond things like training wheels, there are other important considerations such as how much strength the child has built, particularly when they’re under the age of six. A lighter children's bike is easier for kids to ride while they’re still developing the strength needed for riding.
For children up to the age of two, Balance Bikes are a great first step towards learning some of the skills necessary to ride a bike, for example balance and steering.
Looking at the table above, you may want to check out our range of 12” Kids Bikes for children between the ages 2-4, and 16” Kids Bikes if they’re aged between 3-6.
In most cases, 12” and 16” kids bikes will come with training wheels attached, which can be removed as they become more confident riders. They also often include a push steerer, which allows you to guide them when they’re in need of direction or assistance with balancing.

What size bike should I get for my child?
Choosing the right kids bike size depends on your child’s age and height. A bike for a 3-year-old typically has 12-inch wheels, while a bike for a 5-year-old usually has 16-inch wheels. Always check our size chart or visit a store for a professional fitting.
Are training wheels necessary for beginners?
Not always. Many kids start on balance bikes instead of using training wheels. For younger riders, a toddler bike for a 3-year-old may come with stabilisers, but once they develop balance and coordination, they can transition to a pedal kids bicycle without training wheels. How do I choose between different brands and models of kids' bikes?
When picking a bike for kids, consider weight, wheel size, and frame design. Lightweight frames make it easier for children to control their children's bikes, while options like girls bikes and boys bikes come in various styles. Ensure the bike has a comfortable saddle, easy-to-use brakes, and a sturdy frame.
What is the difference between a balance bike and a pedal bike?
A balance bike is a pedal-free toddler bike designed to teach balance and steering. They are ideal for kids under 4 years old. A pedal bike, such as a 14-inch kids bike, includes pedals and brakes, helping children transition from balancing to full riding.
Should I choose a bike with coaster brakes or hand brakes?
Younger children often find coaster brakes (pedal backwards to stop) easier to use. As they grow, hand brakes provide better control. It depends on your child’s coordination and comfort level.
How can I tell if my child has outgrown their bike?
If your child’s knees are too high when pedaling, or they struggle to control the kids bike, it may be time to size up. For instance, a bike for 5 year olds might need upgrading to a 14-inch bike or 16-inch kids bike. Regular size checks help ensure comfort and safety.
Do kids' bikes come assembled, or do I need to put them together?
We sell all of our kids bikes pre-assembled in-store. Only our online shipped bikes require minimal at home assembly. Buy a bicycle for kids today.
