The second half of the Metropolitan Championships involved a road race based from the town of Mt Alford, south of Boonah. A few more of the team made the trip out including Tom racing in Elite C, and Paul, Jimmy, and Rick in Elite B grade with Michael deciding to rest after his recent efforts. Both races would include 4 laps of a testing 23km course with short steep hills and a flat fast finish.
Once again Tom was active in his race, driving the pace several times. He unfortunately picked the wrong wheel to follow for the bunch sprint but still managed to pick up 4th overall and was awarded 1st U19.
With Michael out of action it was decided that Rick would be the protected rider waiting for the likely bunch sprint with Jimmy and Paul looking to form or chase down any breakaways.
The race played out how we were expecting with breakaways forming throughout the race however none staying away for more than half a lap.
The boys worked well together with Jimmy leading Rick up near the front for the decisive climb on each lap and protecting him from the wind on the descent that followed. Not to be content with just that both Jimmy and Paul lead the pack for the last half lap to ensure no-one jumped off the front to steal the win.
In the sprint Rick found the wheel of the guys who went 1-2 in the criterium on Saturday, and they steered him through the chaos to a credible 5th place finish.
