The Metropolitan Championships were held over the weekend, with Saturday’s criterium held at Murarrie, including the QLD U19 state crit champs.
Two of our fellow 99’ers were out to compete that day, one being Michael Hill – competing in his first Elite B Grade Race after successful racing in Elite C, and our youngest member, Tom Miller – racing in the U19 Division.
The U19 event saw a furious young group of riders, throwing it down from the start. Attack after attack saw a several splits in the pack very early on in the day. Ten minutes in however, the pack rejoined after a solo breakaway proved unsuccessful. The remainder was a pure cat and mouse, with the pace yo-yo’ing and the two podium positions up for grabs. The final lap saw our 99 Bikes Team rider on the front, with a hotly contested sprint resulting in a 3rd place for 99 Bikes.
The Elite B race was rather pedestrian in comparison, which played into the hands of the newly promoted (and somewhat sick) 99 Bikes Team sprinter, Michael. After going through the motions for forty minutes the pace picked up and all the top punters were drawn to the front. After grabbing a good wheel and showing an impressive turn of speed, Michael finished a very close 4th, which saw him on the extended podium for the day.
