Bikes for Kids

Turning wee ones into safe cyclists is an important step once they have a new bike. Make sure they get some supervised practise, they have a proper helmet and their bike is cared for properly.

Practise

Children will always need some time to practise on safe pathways with an adult present. With training wheels things will be much easier, but make sure they can ride in a straight line, work the brakes, and corner safely.

Helmet Safety

Helmets are compulsory for anyone riding a bicycle in Queensland including children. Make sure they have an approved helmet (check for Standards Australia sticker), that it fits correctly and has not been damaged. If you suspect they've had an accident, best to replace it.

Bike Care

Once a month it is recommended you pump the tyres and apply lube to the chain to prevent squeaking. Try to keep the bike under cover, if left out in the rain the parts will get a bit rusty. Lastly, if the bike has gears we suggest you book it for an annual service to keep it in top shape.

Bike Size

Kids bikes come in a range of sizes. A simple table below can help you when it comes to looking for the right one.

Sizes Age Range
3 wheel trikes 1-2
12" bikes 3-4
16" bikes 5-7
20" bikes or BMX 8-10
